How to Clean Crystal Jewelry at Home
Camilla Jorgensen
Crystal earns its sparkle from clean facets. A thin film of skin oil or lotion is enough to dull it.
Here is how to clean crystal jewelry at home, using only a soft cloth, mild soap and a little water.
Many crystal pieces have stones held with glue, and some have a foil backing. Water that seeps behind a stone can cloud it or loosen it. A barely damp cloth is safer than a bath.

See a professional if a stone feels loose or goes missing, a prong or post is bent, or a clasp breaks. Stop wearing the piece until it is fixed.
How often should I clean crystal jewelry? Wipe it after each wear. Do a deeper clean when it looks dull, or every few weeks if you wear it often.
Why does my crystal look cloudy? It is usually a thin film of skin oil, lotion or soap. A gentle wipe often brings the shine back.
Can I use water on crystal jewelry? Yes, but only a little. Use a barely damp cloth and dry it right away.
Can I use toothpaste or baking soda? No. They are abrasive and can scratch stones and finishes.
